The Abolition of Turkish Language and Turkish Culture Course in Middle Schools in France

The aim of this research is to examine the opinions of parents and teachers about the abolition of the Turkish Language and Turkish Culture course in middle schools in France. The data for this study were collected through face-to-face interviews using a semi-structured interview form and were conducted with a case study pattern, one of the qualitative research approaches. The typical case sampling method, which is one of the purposive sampling methods, was used to determine the study group of the research. Within the scope of the research, face-to-face interviews were conducted with seven parents, who have children studying in middle schools in France and eight teachers assigned to shcools in France by the Ministry of National Education (France). The data gathered from the interviews were analyzed by content analysis, and certain codes were reached, and related codes were brought together under certain themes. According to the findings, participating parents and teachers stated that the Turkish Language and Turkish Culture course in middle schools in France is necessary and very important for the language development of the students.

Introduction1

 

The culture of a society is shaped by the habits, behaviors, attitudes, and values adopted by its members.2 Each generation is obliged to learn and contribute to the heritage of the society to which it belongs.3 Education is the simplest and, at the same time, the most effective way of transmitting culture.4 In a rapidly changing world, education is the most important factor in the development and continuity of societies and in preserving their culture.5 Individuals who grow up in a cultural climate do not experience identity confusion and do not have belonging problems.6

Language and culture are the most significant factors that both ensure unity and solidarity within a nation and can lead to its demise.7 Language is the most effective tool for passing culture on to future generations.8 These two concepts also play a major role in shaping the societies in which they exist.9 The fact that language forms the basis for creativity and new ideas makes it the guardian of societal and national identity within the framework of culture.10 Language plays a crucial role in enabling individuals to see themselves as part of the society they live in and to adopt that culture.11

Every state establishes an education system that aligns with its governmental structure in order to raise citizens who will protect and sustain its existence.12 This system is aimed at protecting the existing state order and the country, and the education policy of the country is determined in this direction while creating the education system.13 Today, the effort
